Brain Teaser Returns – Are you ready to get you brains teased?

The Train Cars and the Bridge Crossing

A train comes to a bridge that can carry a maximum weight limit of 12 tons. The engine of the train weighs 1 ton, and the four cars that the train is hauling weigh 11 tons, 7 tons, 5 tons, and 2 tons. The heavier the load the slower the train is able to travel. It takes the engine one minute to cross he bridge for every ton of weight that it is pulling, including itself. ( For example, if the one ton engine were hauling an 8 ton car, it would take 9 minutes to cross the bridge.) What is the least amount of time required for the entire tain to cross the bridge? Assume that it doesn’t take any time to hook and unhook the cars at both ends and that there is a switching station at both ends to move the cars around in any order.

I will post the solution to this riddle on Wednesday August, 25, 2010. Good Luck!!

Solution To July 13, 2010 Brain Teaser

A man drops more than 1,000 feet to the ground without a parachute, but he walks away unharmed. How?

To all of you who guessed he was in an elevator, you were correct. The man dropped the 1,000 feet by riding an elevator from the top of the Empire State Building to the ground. I initially thought this may be the answer, but it seemed so easy that I second guessed myself. I promise the next one will be a bit more difficult. Look for it to post tomorrow. Thanks for playing along!

What Other Country Belongs In This Exclusive Group – Solution

OK I’ve got to admit, this one was a great deal more difficult than I thought it would be. It actually required you to use more than just your brian to figure it out. You should have grab a map, or globe, and things may have been clearer.

ALGERIA, BURKINA, FASO, FRANCE,

GHANA,MALI, SPAIN, UNITED KINGDOM

These are the countries through which the zero degree longitude line passes. The missing country is TOGO, on the continent of Africa.

Brain Teaser Solution – What Kind Of Pet Owner Would Emma Be?

The answer was right there in the first post. Dog owners have names that start with a vowel. Cat owners have names that end with a vowel. Emma has a vowel both at the beginning and the end of her name, so she would own both a dog and a cat.

This time I was able to get half of the solution because I looked at this puzzle from an entirely different angle, and it worked. I looked for groups within the groups to help me find the variable that would show the pattern. Now if this could be applied to the way we approach problem solving in general, answers to questions we had given up on finding solutions to may be illuminated.

As we start this new week let’s look for the groups within groups, the patterns within patterns, that have hidden themselves from us, like pearls tucked safely inside of oysters, waiting to be discovered.

Have a great week, God bless you and keep you safe.
