Journeys
Sometimes we are required to venture to places not for pleasure, but for purpose. Such is the case with my upcoming return to Chicago, IL. One part of me is filled with joy, and excitement, at the prospect of returning to the place I was born, but another part just doesn’t want to go to a place that made me feel like my life had no value. It seems that is the persistent theme in my life. I don’t want to think this is because I’m a person of color, but let’s face it, that’s the reason. There still exists in this country a hidden disdain for people of color. Although there is widespread tolerance, the line between tolerance and intolerance is as thin as the air on the moon. The problem is that people of color don’t lift themselves from social exclusion. There is an appearance globally that things have changed, but we all know that the more things change, the more they stay the same! I pray that there will be an awakening and that this planet embraces true brotherhood, and that all are judged not by their color, but by their willingness to love one another. Let’s hope Chicago is a better place than it was when I left.
