Taormina – Sicily

Taormina City Gate

On the island of Sicily, perched high on Mount Tauro sits the medieval city of  Taormina. From its site you can view one of the most stunning panoramas in the world.  The city is about an hour outside of Messina. The drive up the mountain also provided some great views of the Sicilian coast. When we reached the city we had to walk further up the mountain to get the Greek Theatre. It was originally constructed by the Greeks in the 3rd century B.C. and later structurally modified by the Romans. The theater is still in use today. From one vantage point looking through the wall of the  fragmented building Mount Etna spreads from one end of the horizon to the other like a sleeping giant that we dare not disturb for the fear that it would consume us. There are many shops, cafes’ , and ice cream parlors along  ” Corso Umberto ” the name given to the main street. The people were friendly and the place was filled with history.

Please enjoy the photos. On to Barcelona in beautiful Spain.
